Pukalani is a census-designated area in Maui, Hawaii, with a population of 7,380. The name Pukalani came from the Hawaiian words 'puka,' which means 'hole', and 'lani,' which means 'in the sky.' The area is named as such because the Haleakala volcano, on which Pukalani is situated, creates a a rather distinct weather pattern, which surely illuminates the blue skies over the town. Because of its location, the people of Pukalani have the advantage of bright sunshine, and cooler and breezier winds than that of Maui's central cities. Picturesque and stately, Pukalani appeals to varying personalities, as the city somehow projects an aura of rugged beauty and rustic serenity. Pukalani's History
The island of Maui has already seen its share of war and strife with the battles for the right of rule between tribe leaders. These wars were long and bloody, and only ended when the whole island came under the rule of Kamehameha the Great. As the island became the new home of the great king, trade flourished in Maui. Among the trade industries that were rampant during that time was the sandalwood and whaling industry.
The arrival of ranchers and farmers also played a significant role in Hawaiian history and gave rise to a new Maui. Soon, sugar and pineapple plantations developed and Maui became a main producer of these products. The flourishing of these plantations led to the arrival of foreign workers to Maui. Among the first to arrive were the Chinese, then the Japanese, followed by Hispanics, Koreans, and Filipinos. These foreign immigrants grew in number and soon, communities of these workers sprouted in different villages.
As the number of people in Maui grew, so did the communities. People began to search for better places to live in, so they went to the western area of Maui, where the weather was sunny yet cool, and not as crowded as the main cities. Among these communities was Pukalani. People began to discover Pukalani, and they instantly fell in love with its climate and its charm. Located near the slope area of an extinct volcano, Pukalani thrived and grew.
Today, Pukalani is one Maui's prime tourists destination, with its beautiful scenery, courtesy of Mount Haleakala, and its country club, which is famous for its golf courses.
