Kapaau's History

Kapaau boasts of being the place of birth of the great King Kamehameha. He was the ruler of the Hawaiian Islands dynasty that lasted for more than a century. This king's given name literally means "one set apart," in which his efforts to unify the islands of Hawaii lasted for such a time.

In the year 1778, this village, along with back then the rest of the united Hawaiian Islands, saw the arrival of Captain James Cook. This evidently pushed this village, along with the rest of the beautiful islands, out of isolation and towards western trading systems.

In the year 1850, certain laws were approved and passed that made the ownership of private property legal on this holiday paradise. This evidently pushed locals of Hawaiian ancestry out of their own homes because they could not afford land.

But near the end of 1860s, the Hawaiian sugar production industry was born, and this caused Kapaau, alongside the other towns and communities of the Hawaiian Islands, out of their economic turmoil and on towards the global trading system. This also caused more and more people from different lands to migrate to this state, for jobs were fast becoming a major need for the bustling sugar production industry back then.

Unfortunately, in the years 1972 to 1977, the sugar production industry of this community, alongside other sugar-producing communities of Hawaii, closed down. This is because the competition in the global market, especially for sugar, was fast becoming unprofitable for the Hawaiian industry.

Nevertheless, this village's bustling tourism has saved itself from economic demise. Much like the other towns and cities of this state, Kapaau has maintained grace and beauty through the rough and rugged times of the last centuries. Now, this village has been nurtured and turned into a place where the romantic breeze and its breathtakingly glamorous and panoramic view of the oceans surrounding the village shares some of its peace with the locals and visitors.

As such, the living conditions of local residents here can very well match that of any good federal state of America. This is also because of the conversion of prime sugar plantations into cattle-raising farms in the latter part of 1980s.
